Artwork #7 of my exhibition. "Witness at a Crime Sea-n" is an artwork about the horrors of illegal fishing and bycatch. Bycatch refers to the other sea animals caught by fishing nets, such as dolphins and turtles. An acrylic and gouache painting that utilized techniques from Edvard Munch and Dr. Seuss, The "Scream" inspired background and expressive marine characters show their influences. A bag of distressed fish and gawking figure depicts the horrors of illegal fishing. The copious amounts of fish and assortment of exotic sea animals indicated the possibility of improper fishing. The impressionist-style background painted a bloody sea against an evening background, evoking a sinister feeling.
This artwork pushed me out of my comfort zone by being painted in acrylic paint. I wasn't really used to painting with acrylic then and even now, so it forced me to learn and practice Munch's painting techniques. My recreation of Munch's "Moonlight on the Shore" definitely helped me with this.
